Developing a View Model

To develop a view model, you create it with the view model wizard, then add data input sources, parameter definitions, and operators to manipulate the data.

1. Creating a View Model
   Create a view model to specify how your data service combines and transforms data. You have the option of making the view model transactional. Follow these steps to use the view model wizard to set up a skeleton view model; later you can add data input sources and operators to manipulate the data.
2. Browsing for Input Sources
   Find data input sources using Enterprise Explorer and add them to a view model.
3. Checking Dependencies
   Discover where a data service, database operation, virtual database operation, or SQL view gets its data from, or which other objects use its output.
4. Creating an Input Source
   In a view model, Input Source elements represent Data Federation objects such as database operations, files, and data services, which deliver data to the view model.
5. Specify Global Parameters
   If your view model requires input at runtime, configure global parameters to accept the input. You can add new global parameters or map input source parameters to global parameters.
6. Adding an Operator
   Add an operator such as Select, Join, Order By, or Aggregate to a view model. Operators specify how your view model transforms and integrates data.
7. Creating a JavaScript Include File
   You have the option of placing any functions or variables that you want to access from the expressions in your view model in a JavaScript include (.jsi) file. JavaScript include files facilitate code reuse.
8. Testing a View Model
   When your view model is complete, you can test it by executing it.
9. Deploying a View Model as a Data Service
   After testing your view model (.avm file), you deploy it—that is, you create a data service based on the view model and publish it in the data catalog.
