Connecting to a Grid Domain Controller

The grid domain controller (GDC) is the central server in a Data Federation domain. When Sybase WorkSpace is connected to a GDC, you can browse the data catalog, access data sources, and deploy and execute view models. To connect to a GDC, you need a connection profile that encapsulates contact information for the GDC, including its name, port, and a user ID and password.

Prerequisites

The GDC need not be running when you create a connection profile for it, but it must be running when you connect.

  1. In Enterprise Explorer, expand the Grid Domain Controllers node. If connection profiles to any GDCs have already been defined, you'll find them here.
  2. To connect to a GDC with an existing connection profile, right-click the connection profile (under Grid Domain Controllers) and select Connect from the menu. WorkSpace reports success or failure. If the connection succeeds, the data catalog for the GDC’s domain appears in Enterprise Explorer.
  3. To create a connection profile for a GDC, right-click on the Grid Domain Controllers node in Enterprise Explorer and select New. The Grid Domain Controller Connection Profile wizard opens.
  4. Fill in the fields on the first page of the wizard:
    Field Description
Name Enter a name for the connection profile. You might use the name of the grid domain.
Description (Optional) Enter a description of the connection profile.
Auto-connect at startup (Optional) Check if you want to connect to to this GDC whenever you launch WorkSpace.
  5. Click Next and fill in the fields on the Server Properties page of the wizard.
    Field Description
Grid domain controller Enter the fully qualified hostname of the GDC—for example, myhost.mydomain.com.
Connect port Enter the connect port of the GDC. The default is 3099.
Authentication service Enter or select from the pull-down menu the name of the authentication service to which the user ID for this connection profile belongs. The default is DefaultAuthService.
Type Enter or select from the pull-down menu the type of the authentication service. The type for DefaultAuthService is Grid; other legal values are Nis and Ldap.
Username Enter the user ID this connection profile will use to log in to the grid domain. The default user ID is Administrator.
Password Enter the password for the user ID. The default password for Administrator is Administrator.
Save Password (Optional) Check if you want this connection profile to supply the password when you connect to the GDC. If you don’t check the box, WorkSpace prompts you for the password every time it connects.
  6. (Optional) If the GDC is running, click Test Connection to try out your new connection profile. WorksSpace attempts to connect to the GDC you specified and reports success or failure. If the connection succeeds, the data catalog for the GDC’s domain appears in Enterprise Explorer.
  7. Click Next to display a summary of the connection profile. Click <Back if you want to change any of the values you entered.
  8. When you’re satisfied with the connection profile, click Finish to save it.

The new connection profile appears under Grid Domain Controllers in Enterprise Explorer.
