Deriving a View Model from a Metadata Model

Deriving a view model from a metadata model is a way to create a new view model (and eventually a new data service) with a designated output schema.

When you edit a derived view model, WorkSpace Data Federation makes sure that the view model’s output matches the schema you specified. You can be sure that the results of a data service deployed from the view model will conform to the original metadata model.
  1. Open a project in the Navigator pane and double-click a metadata model to bring it into the editor pane.
  2. Right-click the table whose schema you want to use and select Derive View Model. The View Model window appears
  3. Specify the Container (that is, the project) and File Name for the new view model.
  4. Click Finish. A new view model is created in the editor. Its Result element shows the target schema that you selected.
As you add Input Source elements, operators, and connections to the view model, WorkSpace Data Federation monitors the schema and alerts you if the view model’s schema diverges from that of the metadata model.
CAUTION:
A derived view model’s schema is a snapshot of the parent metadata model’s schema. There’s no link between the view model and the metadata model, so if the metadata model changes, the derived view model’s schema will not be updated automatically—you must derive a new view model to capture the changes.
