Each data catalog entry is a logical representation of a physical data source or data service.
Several types of entries exist:
Database operations provide access to some specific data from a relational database.
Data services give your applications broader access to data from relational databases, files, and HTTP-based data sources such as a CGI scripts, servlets, or web services—and also perform transformations.
SQL views each represent a data service, a database operation, or a table in a relational database—and like tables, SQL views respond to SQL queries.
View generators can convert provisioned or transformed data into a formatted output file in the data catalog.
Database connectors enable database operations and SQL views to connect to external databases.
File entries are links to files that exist somewhere on a file server—these can be data files, XML documents, XSLT style sheets used for data processing, and so on.
Data Federation shares are directories shared from a file server into the data catalog. All files in the data catalog reside in Data Federation shares.
