Configuring Open Client

This section describes only the basic configuration steps to use Open Client with EAServer. For complete information on configuring Open Client, see the Open Client/Server Configuration Guide for UNIX on the Product Manuals Web site.

The Open Client files are installed in the openclient-12.5.1 subdirectory of your EAServer installation if you select the Open Client option from the installer.

StepsConfiguring the Open Client environment

  1. “Set required environment variables”

  2. “Add server definitions to the interfaces file”

  3. “Verify connectivity using isql”

Set required environment variables

EAServer 6.0.2 is designed to use Open Client version 12.5.1 and later. Earlier versions of Open Client use the SYBASE environment variable. More recent versions use the environment variables SYBASE and SYBASE_OCS. The default installation of Open Client 12.5.1 sets:

These two variables are defined in the setup scripts for EAServer 6.0.2. You must ensure that your global Open Client sets them correctly.

You can also use the local-setenv.sh script to locally define which installation of Open Client to use.

To set the environment variables, edit the local_setenv.sh setup script located in EAServer/bin. Create this file if it does not exist. Settings in this file are added to the server environment when it starts.

After you run the setup script, set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variables manually.

Prefix the Open Client lib and bin subdirectories to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable. For example:

setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $SYBASE/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Add server definitions to the interfaces file

The interfaces file in the Open Client installation directory is a text file that defines server names and addresses. You must add entries for each EAServer or database server to which you intend to connect.

StepsAdding server entries to the file with a text editor

  1. Create the file $DJC_HOME/interfaces if it does not already exist.

  2. Open the file in your text editor and add an entry in this format:

    server_name
    		master tcp ether host, tds_port
    		query tcp ether host, tds_port

    where:

NoteThe master and query lines must begin with a single tab and no spaces.

Verify connectivity using isql

Run the Open Client isql tool to verify the configuration:

$SYBASE/bin/isql -I $DJC_HOME/interfaces -S server_name -U user -P password

where:

If isql shows a command prompt and not an error message, the connection is successful.
