All Data Federation objects—including files, directories,
Data Federation shares,
data services,
SQL views,
database operations, servers, and services—have attributes by default that are called system attributes. Users can create additional user-defined attributes.
System attributes |
Every object in the data catalog has system attributes, though the system attributes are not the same for every object. System attributes are read-only. These are typical system attributes:
- Creation time
- Grid server this object resides on
- Last access time
- Last change time
- Link count (the number of directories or categories to which a link to this object is bound)
- Owner
- Size

User-defined attributes |
You can create user-defined attributes for any Data Federation object
for which you have write permission. (We recommend against adding
attributes in the /System directory.) Because you can search on
attributes and not on the contents of objects in the data catalog, consider creating attributes that contain
search strings for objects (files, directories, data services, etc.) that you’ll want to find
in a search. You can also use attributes to attach a project name or a date
to certain files.
Anyone with write permission on an object can change the values of the object’s user-defined attributes. |
