Localization Support

SAP ASE supports localization for international customers and for customers with heterogeneous environments.

Localization is setting up an application to run in a particular language or country environment, including translated system messages and correct formats for date, time, and currency.

By default, the SAP ASE and Backup Server configurations use the English locale settings, which include:

Character set definition files for Western European character sets
Sort-order definition files for Western European character sets
US English system message files

During installation or through reconfiguration, you can specify a different language, character set, and sort order.

SAP ASE stores its localized software messages in separate language modules.
Default Character Sets
The default character set is the one in which data is encoded and stored on the SAP ASE databases.

Use the charset utility to load character sets and sort orders into SAP ASE. If you are using charset to load the default character set and sort order, this should be done only during installation.

Character Set Conversion
Backup Server passes messages to SAP ASE in the client’s language and in the SAP ASE character set. SAP ASE converts the messages and issues them in the client’s language and character set.
Sort Orders
Each character set comes with one or more sort orders (collating sequences), which are located in the sort-order definition files (.srt files). These files accompany the character set definition files and can be found in the same directory.

Changing SAP ASE Localization Configuration
Each language module uses approximately 2MB database space. If necessary, use the alter database command to increase the size of the master database before adding another language.
