Creating a Web Application Project

A Web application must be developed in a Web application project.

  1. From the Web Application Development perspective main menu bar, select File > New > Web Application Project.
  2. Follow the wizard instructions, including the Dynamic Web Project settings:
    • Project name – the name of the folder that contains all project related resources.
    • Project contents – the location of the project. If you select Default, the contents location is the workspace directory plus the project name.
    • Target Runtime – select an existing target for which this project is targeted, or select New and define a new target.
Note: If you select a target runtime, the enterprise application project (EAR) membership is disabled.
    • Configurations – a default configuration is automatically chosen based on the selected target runtime. You can override the default by selecting another configuration. The configuration determines which facets and other resources are bundled with your project. You can change this later by adding, removing, or otherwise customizing the Web project facets.
    • Choose Template – instead of selecting a configuration, you can select a predefined template from the drop-down list that automatically uses the appropriate configuration.
    • EAR membership – add the project to an existing EAR, or create a new EAR to which you can add this project. You can also create an EAR later if required.
  3. Click Finish to create your Web application project or Next to continue defining the project. If you click Next, the project facets page displays. From this page of the wizard, you can define:
    • Project Facets – each Web project contains a predefined set of facets (depending on the selected target runtime and configurations settings) that help facilitate the development of your project. You can customize these defaults by selecting or unselecting facets as needed.
Note: If you select a facet that is not supported for your configuration, an error message displays. You cannot continue until you correct the problem.

If you create a custom configuration, you can save it and use it when creating other Web application projects.

    • Show Runtimes – select this option if you want to add runtimes or change your target runtime settings.
  4. Click Finish to create your Web application project or Next to continue defining the project. If you click Next, the Web Module configuration page displays. Use the default settings, or modify the settings as needed.
  5. Click Finish. Your Web application project is created and can be located by its project name in the Workspace Navigator.
