Encrypting Unwired Server Communication Streams

Optional. Enable an SSL encrypted port to secure Unwired Server synchronization, admistration, and file-based download streams (with Afaria Server). SSL and HTTPS rely on the use of digital certificates, which are typically verified and signed by third-party trusted authorities.

This section outlines steps you must take to protect administration and synchronization streams. Generally you must always connect to the correct HTTPS port in Sybase Control Center (Server Configuration tab), then you must generate and implement the correct certificate, which is a manual step outside of Sybase Control Center.

Note:

The HTTPS protocol is slower than the HTTP protocols; only use SSL if HTTPS is truly required.

  1. Generating Certificates for HTTPS-Enabled Synchronization
    Generate public, private, and identity keys by generating a certificate request with the gencert command line utility.
  2. Implementing HTTPS for Unwired Server Synchronization
    Optionally implement the HTTPS certificate if you have enabled the HTTPS protocol for the Unwired Server synchronization listener.
  3. Generating Certificates for HTTPS-enabled Administration
    By default Unwired Server administration includes a certificate for HTTPS encryption. This certificate differs from the one you configure for HTTPS encrypted synchronization.
  4. Implementing HTTPS for Unwired Server Administration
    Optionally implement the HTTPS certificate if you have enabled the HTTPS protocol for the Unwired Server administration listener.
