Configuring Unwired Server

Unwired Server is the application server included with Sybase Unwired Platform that manages mobile applications, back-end data source synchronization, communication, security, transactions, and scheduling. Configuration tasks for Unwired Server vary depending on many factors, including whether you are deploying Unwired Server to a development or production environment.

For example, a development version of Unwired Server may not need the same security features enabled as a production version of Unwired Server would. Moreover, while both development and productions versions of the server may require connection pools, the targets configured might vary considerably. These differences are summarized in greater detail below.

Table 1. Differences in Unwired Server configuration in development and production environments
Unwired Server configuration task Development environment Production environment
Server discovery: Adding Unwired Server to Sybase Control Center so the server can be administered Optional, depending if a developer wants to configure Unwired Server with Sybase Control Center or run the server with defaults only. Required
Security: Configuring authentication methods Optional Required. The number of mechanisms used depends on security strength required.
Security: Configuring synchronization encryption over SSL Optional Required
Datasource end points: Configuring connection pools Optional. These can be configured in Unwired WorkSpace for development purposes. Required
Server configuration: Tuning performance Optional, depending if a developer wants production values configured to test application speeds in production-like conditions. Required
Server configuration: Creating/managing server clusters Optional If client volumes are high or large quantities of data are being synchronized, add a relay server.
Relay server: Configuring a relay server to forward synchronization requests Optional. You can use the Sybase Hosted Relay Service for development and testing. Recommended to distribute client requests to available servers.

The configuration tasks you perform depend on your deployment requirements. Complete details are documented in the Sybase Control Center online help in Sybase Control Center > Configure > Unwired Platform > Configuring Unwired Server.
