Shared memory is the default communications mechanism when the client and server are on the same system. Shared memory is configured automatically, and starts automatically, on both UNIX and Windows platforms. When the client and server are on the same machine and the -hs option is not used to start the server, Sybase IQ uses a shared memory segment and several semaphores for communication.
