Creating a client upgrade rule

Caution

Under normal circumstances, create a client upgrade rule only when the To New Client Version is newer than the From Current Client Version.

  1. Log in to M-Business Server.

  2. In the navigation panel, choose Server » Client Upgrade » Create Rule.

  3. Enter the information for the client upgrade rule:

    • Rule Name – enter a descriptive name.

The characters not allowed in rule names are the same as for user names. See Unsupported characters.

    • Device Type – select All if the rule will apply to all device types, or select one device type (or platform, or operating system) to which the rule will apply:

      • Palm – for any Palm OS device (not for Palm-branded devices running a Microsoft OS)

      • Pocket PC – for non-phone devices with "Pocket PC" in the branding, including Windows Mobile 5 devices (the installer automatically detects older Pocket PC vs. newer Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC and installs the correct version)

      • PPC-Smartphone – for Microsoft Smartphone devices (does not work with other Smartphone devices that do not have Microsoft in the branding)

      • Windows – for any device with a Windows XP operating system, for example, Tablet PCs and laptops

    • From Current Client Version – type the current M-Business Client version from which devices will be upgraded. Use the format <majorversion>.<minorversion>.<buildnumber>. M-Business Client versions that are identical to, or earlier than, the version you enter here will be upgraded, if other upgrade rule criteria are met.

      Note

If you are unsure of the M-Business Client build number, enter 999 for <buildnumber> above.

    • To New Client Version – select the new M-Business Client version to which devices matching the From Current Client Version will be upgraded.

      Note

You cannot specify an M-Business Client version to upgrade to unless the version is represented in this client download directory structure.

    • Apply To – select All if the rule will apply to all user groups, or select the group to which the rule will apply. See Managing Groups for information on setting up groups.

  4. Click Create to save the client upgrade rule.
