DATENAME function [Date and time]

DATENAME( date-part, timestamp-expression )

date-part The date part to be named.
For a complete listing of allowed date parts, see Specifying date parts.
timestamp-expression The TIMESTAMP or TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE value for which the date part name is to be returned. For meaningful results, timestamp-expression should contain the requested date-part.

VARCHAR

The DATENAME function returns a string, even if the result is numeric, such as 23 for the day. When the date part TZOffset is specified, DATENAME returns the offset as a string of the form: { + | - }hh:nn.

SELECT DATENAME( month, '1987/05/02' );
