A backend server section in the configuration file can only be removed when there are no relay servers running. You can still update the section with enable=no in order to disable access to a backend server.
When some or all relay servers in the relay server farm are running, do not remove the backend server section from the configuration file or the entire relay server farm has to be restarted together with the new configuration file.
