The primary companion can be either a newly installed Adaptive Server, or it can be upgraded from an earlier version of Adaptive Server with existing databases, users, and so on.
The secondary companion must be a newly installed Adaptive Server without any user logins or user databases. This ensures that all user logins and database names are unique within the cluster. After configuration for fail over is complete, you can add user logins and databases to the secondary companion.
