You can put a database in sleep mode by using:
quiesce database
This command both suspends and resumes updates to a specified list of databases. See the Reference Manual: Commands and “Suspending and resuming updates to databases” in Chapter 11, “Developing a Backup and Recovery Plan,” of the System Administration Guide: Volume 2.
