New and Enhanced Features in Sybase Control Center for Adaptive Server
Feature Topics

Common Security Infrastructure – updates to the CSI improve SCC security and provide consistency across Sybase products.

Find a resource in the Administration Console – use new search and filter tools to locate objects of interest.

Searching and Filtering Resources

Data retrieval options – you can set thresholds to improve performance of the Administration Console.

Granular permissions – grant system privileges to construct site-specific roles with privileges to match your requirements and restrict system administrators and database owners from accessing user data.

Enabling Granular Permissions

Predicated privileges – use predicated privileges to provide a system of flexible row-level access controls, allowing you to grant, select, update, and delete privileges to different users, groups, or roles based on a predicate Adaptive Server evaluates when it accesses the data.

Precomputed result set – a precomputed result set improves performance in databases where queries have common sub-expressions resulting in repetitive operations on base tables. The precomputed result set feature lets you:
  • Create a precomputed result set on any query expression and define a set of policies for maintenance.
  • Display a precomputed result set set.
  • Retrieve precomputed result set information, as well as the relations with other objects.
  • Configure a precomputed result set with an immediate refresh policy as part of the same transaction that updates the base tables.
  • Define a manual refresh policy, which recomputes the precomputed result set.
  • Support the security definition for precomputed result set.

Precomputed Result Sets

Update statistics – updates include:
  • Hash-based update statistics support which reduces elapsed time and resource usage.
  • Commands update all statistics and update table statistics have been added for table objects.
  • Additional support for the commands update statistics and update index statistics.

Managing Statistics

Diagnostic data wizard – use the Adaptive Server Field Diagnostic Utility and Optimizer Diagnostic Utility to collect diagnostic data for Adaptive Server. The generated diagnostic data package is used by the Sybase customer support organization.

Collect Diagnostic Data

Adaptive Server alerts – control how certain log entries are flagged by setting an alert based on the number of flags received or the severity of the flags. Flag definitions are available based on these log-related KPIs (key performance indicators):
  • KPI_ASE_NUM_ERRORLOG_INFO
  • KPI_ASE_NUM_ERRORLOG_WARNING
  • KPI_ASE_NUM_ERRORLOG_ERROR
  • KPI_ASE_NUM_ERRORLOG_CRITICAL

Adaptive Server Alerts

Database backup and restore – the database dump and load mechanism is provided to define, update, delete, and view multiple dump configurations.

Creating a Dump Configuration

Error logs – viewing server messages written to the error log has been updated. The updates include:
  • The log viewer is available from the Monitor view.
  • Log entries are auto-refreshed.
  • Usability improvements such as better filtering feedback, improved log entry icons, and support for additional regular expressions.

Adaptive Server Error Log

Message rows – the status of each object retrieval request is provided in a message row in the Administration Console. Message rows provide details for slow-responding requests, large result sets, and failed requests.
