Installing the Server in GUI Mode

Learn how to install the server components in GUI mode.

If you are installing the Cluster Edition in private installation mode, use the installer for each instance in the cluster. This ensures that environment variables, soft links, and so on are set correctly for each instance.

Sybase recommends installing products as a system administrator; however, root permissions are not required to run the installer. The Installer creates the target directory (if necessary) and installs the selected components into that directory. At the end of the installation, you can verify the product installation. You may need to perform additional configuration procedures before you can use some products.

You must source the environment variables needed for Adaptive Server products by running the SYBASE.csh script file after exiting the Installer.

  1. Shut down all programs before running the installer.
  2. Insert the Adaptive Server CD, or download and extract the Adaptive Server installation image from the Sybase Product Download Center (SPDC).
  3. Create a /cdrom directory, and then enter:
    mount -v "cdrfs" -r <device> /cdrom
  4. Launch the Installer. For a CD drive enter:
    /cdrom/setup.bin
  5. Select a directory for the installation. Click Next to accept the default of:
    /opt/sybase
  6. If you are updating your pre-existing server, you will not see this step. Choose the type of installation to be performed:
    • Typical
    • Full
    • Custom
  7. If you select Custom, the Products and Features Selection window displays. Select the products to install by checking the box next to the product name. Some features are dependent on other features; therefore, the installer prevents you from unselecting some items without first unselecting others.
  8. Select the most appropriate country from the drop-down list, read the license terms, and then click I agree. Click Next.
  9. Enter the license key here. If you do not have a license key choose to continue without and click Next to view the summary screen. However, if you chose to install a served license, click Next, to set up the license server.
  10. Select the license type for the Cluster Edition:
    • CP – CPU license
    • DT – development and test license
    • AC – OEM Application Deployment CPU license
    • LP – application specific CPU license
    • Unknown – without a license
  11. Configuring your server for e-mail notification enables designated users to receive information about license management events requiring attention. Provide the following information:
    • SMTP server host name
    • SMTP server port number
    • E-mail Return Address
    • Recipient e-mail addresses
    • Message severity that triggers e-mail messages
  12. The Product Selection Summary window displays the selections that you have made. Verify that you have selected the correct type of installation, and that you have enough disk space to complete the process. Click Next.
  13. The Install Progress window shows the progress of the installation. The Install Status window displays the result of the installation process.
  14. The Installation Complete window is the last window. If you encounter any errors, see the Troubleshooting Guide. At the end of a successful installation click Done.
